6 Key Leadership Essentials - Part 4 Handling the Hot Seat
A lot of what we do in life involves selling. No, we’re not talking about the high-pressure salesperson trying to pitch you a product or the fast-talking guy on TV that shouts about sending you two if you act now.
The type of selling we’re talking about happens in everyday life when you have a vision or an idea that you’re called on to address in as credible and compelling way as possible in three minutes or less.
Imagine this…
The head big-wig calls you into an unplanned (for you) meeting with all the big-wigs and you’re asked to share your great new idea that everyone is talking about.
It hits you, that moment of hesitation when you're caught off guard and suddenly eyes are on you - looking for answers that you know ... but weren't prepared to present.
What do you do?
Here are a few tips that will help you thru the little surprises and big opportunities that impromptu workplace moments throw at you.
Keep your composure. The ability to control your emotions, your body language, and to keep a clear head is essential to owning the moment. Remember the old commercial, “never let them see you sweat”? That famous line was built for these moments.
Stay confident. To appear confident and composed, be very aware that good posture, minimal fidgeting, and making eye contact with those around you is essential.
Stay on point and keep your message concise. To get the essence of your idea or vision you want to get across, think in terms of a 30-second elevator speech. Communicate your vision clearly and then ask, “What else can I share with you about this idea?”
Credibility is crucial. One of the best pieces of advice for anyone who finds themselves on the hot seat is to tell the truth even when it hurts. By taking ownership of the bad as well as the good stuff, not hiding behind lame excuses, or passing the buck, you have the opportunity to let your integrity shine.
As you move through your growing leadership experiences remember one thing all great, brilliant Leaders know: The opportunities you gain depend on the confidence you’ve inspired in those around you.
Whether you’re angling for the corner office, directing a group of volunteers or just leading your family on a fun adventure, being a great, brilliant leader means those you touch can count on you to step up when the heat is on.
